Vertical outlet pipes (also called "risers") are used to set the primary spillway water elevation in a pond or water impondment.

The trash guard shown on top of this riser forces the water in the pond to flow under the trash rack and at the same time blocks floating debris from discharging through the top of the riser. The inverted elbow shown on the riser is a mechanism by which the top portion of the impoundment can be discharged over a long period of time.

Permanent pond risers and their outlet discharge pipes are usually specified Aluminum which has excellent corrosion resistance.
